yesterday. still 39 degrees at nashville airport. winds are light out of the southeast, averaging 5 miles per hour. temperatures around the region are, most important of all, above the freezing mark, especially from i-81 eastbound here, temperatures middle and upper 30s for the most part. i say it's a good thing we're above freezing because storm team 4 radar does show light raindrops. some more showers scattered out and about i-81 in the blue ridge and shenandoah valley. we're going to keep a close eye. not going to add up to too much. couple of hundredths inch of rain. could rule out a touch of some freezing rain or a sleep pellet or two, but not looking for any problems to impact any of the major roadways around town. your friday planner, spotty showers around town. most of the light rain chances stacked up in the morning hours. cloudy and chilly for much of the friday temperatures, generally speaking, in the 50s. bus stop weather, jackets required.

7.9%. they believe the economy added fewer than 100,000 jobs last month. some think that that number could be fewer than 50,000. they say companies may be waiting to see if we plunge off the fiscal cliff before hiring more employees. economists say superstorm sandy also likely slowed job growth last month. negotiations on a budget deal will continue today. meanwhile, president obama says a northern virginia family is proof that a deal must get done before the end of the year. he met with tiffany and richard santana yesterday. the middle class couple is living with tiffany's parents to help make ends meet. she wrote about her struggles to the white house as part of a social media campaign. >> at first it was just that white house.gov was going to come and get a little more information about our story, and we really thought it was going to be that, just white house.gov coverage. as the days went on, we understood that that senior

white house officials was the white house official. so it was pretty exciting for us. >> president obama and lawmakers now have less than four weeks to reach a deal to avoid steep tax hikes and spending cuts from taking effect. 4:34 now. melissa mollet is at the live desk with breaking news. good morning, melissa. >> good morning. sirens are going off. a tsunami warning in japan. take a look at this video we just got into the newsroom. the 7.2 magnitude earthquake has hit off the northern coast. you can see that trafblling camera moving as that quake hits. it shook and swayed buildings for several minutes. residents being told to flee to higher ground right now. at this point, no reports of any damage or injuries. this was the same region that was hit by a massive quake and tsunami in march of 2011. in that quake and tsunami, 19,000 people were killed or went missing. we'll keep an eye on this for you. news outlets are reporting

that north korea may set off a long range rocket as early as monday. the country is reportedly fueling the rocket, but satellite images show that heavy snowfall may have slowed down preparations. north korea wants to launch what it calls a peaceful satellite sometime before december 22nd. the u.s. believes the rocket is a cover test for missile technology. the ongoing unrest in egypt has president obama speaking out. the white house says the president has called egyptian president mohamed morsi to express concerns about recent protests that have resulted in numerous deaths and injuries. he told the president that he must make clear to supporters that violence is unacceptable. it comes after a violent night in cairo, where six were killed and nearly 700 others injured. this morning we're getting a clearer idea of how much it will cost to clean up after hurricane sandy. new jersey governor chris christie says superstorm sandy caused $37 billion in damages to his state. christie was in washington

yesterday making stops at the white house and capitol hill, asking lawmakers for an additional $83 billion in disaster relief for his state as well as new york and connecticut. right now in montgomery county police need your help finding a missing man who possibly spent the night in the cold. he's 34-year-old eric olson, and he's from the derwood area. his family says he takes medication but didn't have it with him. olson was outside his home on deer lake road. he had on a blue winter coat and dark blue sweat pants. if you've seen this man, you're asked to contact montgomery county police. a crime alert. police believe two women are responsible for a string of burglaries in the ivory tower dorm. if each case, women left their doors open. the women came in and walked away with lap tops. police warn students to lock their dorm room doors when they leave and consider keeping it locked when they're in the room as well. gaithersburg is worried that wild animals will strike again.

wild dogs or possibly coyotes killed sheep on their farm. if wild animals attack sheep, a person could also be in danger. >> we have so many kids in the surrounding area, and they all play outside. these dogs or whatever they are are out there, and it is just a matter of time before they attack a person walking or children. >> this was the second attack like this in two weeks. the family believes the sheep are easy prey and could be attacked again. one prince george's county teen may not have gotten a whole lot of sleep last night. she could make history tonight on the basketball court. jasmine hill will look to become the first woman ever to score 1,000 points. right now she has 996 points heading into tonight's game. she'll continue her hoops career next year at howard university. congrats to her. >> it's in the bag. she just has to make two shots. she can get it. it's 40 degrees here at 4:37. ahead on "news 4 today,"

down. the storm killed three people and forced hundreds from their homes. it's the deadliest tornado to hit there in more than 60 years. >> incredible video right there. 4:41. time for weather and traffic on the ones. storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell is here with us. we're hoping it turns into a nice weekend, chuck. >> i think it's going to be all right as weekends go. most important thing is it will be two weeks long, and you need the days off to get your christmas shopping and other holiday shopping done. it's not a bad way to get friday morning started, but it is cloudy. temperatures in the mid and upper 30s. what's most important is we're above the freezing mark. hagerstown down 91 through front royal and winchester. not a lot of heavy rain. couple of hundredths inches of rain at most. keeping a close eye up here in the shenandoah valley up into southern pennsylvania, there's a slight little chance of a little freezing rain or sleet mixing in. road services all above freezing. not looking for a big problem.

this is melissa mollet at the live desk. we just learned in a bangladesh factory where 130 workers died. the owner admits he was illegally expanding the building from three floors to nine. the workers tied last month when a fire broke out and emergency exits were either locked or nonexistent. despite all the violations, it was still operating. the factory made garments for walmart, disney, and sears. the time is 4:45. police in midland, texas, said the parade float driver involved in the accident that killed four people would not be charged. the driver was towing the float for last month's veterans day parade. the float was killed by a freight train. four veterans of iraq were killed and six other people were injured.

attorneys for john mcafee are planning to file an emergency appeal to keep their client in guatemala. he was denied political asylum, which maeeans he could be flown back to belize. he was admitted to the hospital complaining of chest pains. police in guatemala arrested mcafee for entering the country illegally. he says his life is in danger in belize because he has evidence of political corruption. a woman assaulted a clerk at the econolodge in woodbridge. a man called the front desk and claimed he was locked out of his room. when the clerk went up to help, a masked man with a knife pulled her in the room and attacked her. last month police arrested a man for assaulting a maid. hotel guests say these stories are concerning. >> it scares me to death because there's all different kinds of people that stay here, coming

off the roads and things. i'm scared going outside. >> management at the econolodge plan to add more security cameras and improve lighting. they also plan to hire a security guard. this morning a man is locked up for the murder of a 14-year-old in prince george's county. 24-year-old jose rodriguez nunez is charged with second degree murder. detectives say he killed reyes in a drive by shooting in lewisdale. another man was hurt in the shooting. he's since been released from the hospital. a $25,000 reward was offered in the case. police have not said tips led to the arrest. police are trying to figure out who attacked a george washington university. a woman who works in the hall says a man tried to sexually assault her in the bathroom after hours. it was in rice hall, an administrative building, and police say the suspect would have had to use a special card to get inside. this morning the university has

added more security to that building. today we will commemorate the anniversary of the attack on pearl harbor. survivors will attend a wreath laying ceremony at the intrepid sea, air, and space museum. in our area, flags will be flown at half staff on all local, state, and federal buildings in virginia. governor bob mcdonnell will attend a ceremony and lay a wreath at the virginia war memorial in richmond. the governor has signed a proclamation. players and owners have seemed to make progress all week in resolving the now 83-day long nhl lockout, but after meeting for just an hour, the owners rejected an eight-year collective bargaining proposal. now all seems to be lost. >> it looks like this is not going to be resolved in the

immediate future. i hope that turns out to be wrong. >> i am disappointed beyond belief that we are where we are tonight, and we're going to have to take a deep breath and try and regroup. >> owners told players not to expect another meeting before the weekend, and they say they have pulled many of their concessions off the table. it may not be the capitals, but the verizon center finally got to host some hockey last night. the caps american league farm team the hershey bears took on the norfolk admirals in front of a sellout crowd. it didn't look good for the bears when they lost the lead. but they held on with a 2-1 win. grant holtby had 26 saves on the night. the redskins are used to making trades, but this morning the team finds itself as part of a proposed trade. d.c. leaders are proposing an unusual trade.

they'll support the fbi moving its headquarters to prince george's county if the skins move back to washington. the fbi wants to leave its current facility in d.c. prince george's county would have to let the redskins break their lease at fedex field to move. county executive rushern baker says he isn't discussing the proposed trade. >> i wonder if that is going to happen. >> that would be something. >> a lot of people have called for the redskins to be in washington because it's in washington. >> that's a big deal. that's not something that can happen really quickly. we're coming up on 4:51. time to get a check of weather and traffic on the ones. take a look at that. >> storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell with more on what we can expect today. chuck, good morning to you. how is it looking out there? an awful lot of cloud cover out there this morning. good morning to both of you. and a good friday morning to everyone out there in the news 4 nation. cloudy this morning, yes, indeed. a little light rain across the area as well.

temperatures comfortably above the freezing mark. that's one of the most important things in the early morning forecast. temperatures upper 30s to near 40 degrees. even with light rain showers showing up on storm team 4 radar, not looking for slippery problems other than regular water on the road. spotty showers this morning. temperatures inching into the low 40s by 8:00. upper 40s to low 50s this morning, cloudy, chilly. not quite as cold as it was yesterday afternoon. with all the clouds, not quite as pretty a day to look at. as a result, recess on your friday, cloudy and chilly. only a "c" today, kids. there's a chance of wet grass and ugliness outside. there you go on the radar. first thing, light rain showers, northern parts of prince william and fauquier county, right on interstate 66. the inbound trip, could see a patch or two of wet roads and also down into southern maryland. route 4, route 5, could see light rain. just a touch colder. still light rain. one or two sleep pellets or frozen raindrops, may be making it down to the ground. plenty of warm air coming in our

products, including the popular smartphones until 2014. they're the last major carrier to go to apple. customers will have access to apple's ipad. meanwhile, apple is getting a lot of attention for a biusines move it plans to make next year. apple ceo tim cook tells nbc's brian williams in an exclusive interview the company plans to make some of its products here in the u.s. next year although he didn't specify which products were where. over the years, apple has become known for having its products made overseas, most notably in china. you can see the whole interview on rock center with brian williams tonight at 10:00 right here on nbc 4. >> last minute shoppers rejoice. macy's famous one-day sale can last 48 hours. the retailer says it plans to keep all the stores open nationwide beginning at 7:00 a.m. on friday, december 21st, through 7:00 a.m. on sunday,
